About Us

We are a small, but diverse, family of believers in Jesus Christ who seek to love God and love others.  Jesus has captured our hearts and we live our lives for Him because of what He did for us at the Cross.  We do not always get it right (in fact, many times we don't), but we are thankful to God that He loves us anyway.  We welcome you to discover with us how "wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (Ephesians 3:18-19).

Our Worship
Our worship is simple, but we try to worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:19-24).  If you come visit us on Sunday morning, here are a few of the things we do to worship God:

  • Pray to God: we tell God our needs and thank Him for what He has done and is doing in our lives.
  • Read Scripture: we read aloud from God's Word, the Bible
  • Sing Songs of Worship: we sing old and new songs in an acapella style (acapella means "without instruments").  We find this helps us focus on the meaning of what we are singing to God.
  • Share in the Lord's Supper (also called Communion): we share bread and grape juice as a way of remembering and participating in Jesus' life.
  • Listen to the Word of God Preached: one of our brothers shares with us from God's Word.
  • Give Money: we give money to support the work of the Church and to help those in need.

Brief History
We have been worshiping God as a part of the Newport community for almost 30 years.  Our attendance has ebbed and flowed during that time as we have had a number of different evangelists serve the Church.  We have a special place in our hearts for the young people of Newport and their families, and often have special events for young people including Holiday Bible School, British Bible Camp, and more.

Churches of Christ
You may be wondering "what are Churches of Christ?"  If you have never heard of Churches of Christ before, you should know that we are a fellowship of churches who are trying to model our lives and worship on the teachings of Scripture and the general model of the 1st Century AD Church.  We have two sayings that help to guide our decisions:

  1. "Where the Bible speaks we speak, and where the Bible is silent we are silent."
  2. "We are Christians only, but we are not the only Christians."
We agree with other Christian denominations on the divinity of Jesus (that Jesus is God), the doctrine of the Trinity (that God is "three persons-in-one"), that the Bible is God's holy and inspired revelation to us, and that Jesus Christ will one day return to judge all people based on whether they trust in Him.  However, we emphasize the importance of baptism for the "remission of sins" (taking away of sins), choose to worship in an acapella style (that is "without instruments"), and believe that the best way for the Church to be governed is through local elders (men chosen because of their spiritual maturity to lead and care for the congregation).  Please let us know if you have more questions about Churches of Christ.
